Way Back Machine

Hi there!

During my sophomore and junior years at Duke University, I was one of the photographers for the school paper The Chronicle. I shot sports primarily.

I remember fondly talking with other photographers standing on the sidelines or sitting underneath the basket. These were 'togs from UPI, AP, Sports Illustrated, and local and regional papers, all with multiple Nikon F3 cameras (with long and short lens and motor drives) hanging around their necks.

Me?

I had but a single hand-me-down Pentax Spotmatic with a simple zoom.

No motor drive.

All manual.

We shot Kodak Tri-X 400 film that we spooled from bulk. Then we pushed developed to 1600 in the darkroom. Darkroom time was long and tedious. My grades suffered, but the bug was there - I have had cover photos printed in publications like Soccer America and Duke Sports Information media guides, as well as feature photos in news outlets such as Orlando Sentinel and Winston-Salem Times. And as they say, the rest is history.
